Real Problems, Custom Fixes: 3 Ways 80/20 Solved Framing Challenges
Structural aluminum framing offers a flexible, reconfigurable way to solve problems that a fixed, one-size-fits-all structure can't. Whatever the application, the story is often the same: a supplier that's too slow, a design that doesn't quite fit the way people actually work, or a challenge nobody's tackled before.
Here's a look at three recent projects, spanning a grain processing machine builder, automotive manufacturer, and defense customer, that show how their pain points turned into working solutions.
1. Grain Processing Machine Builder: Solving a Custom Parts Bottleneck
The Challenge: A grain processing machine builder needed individual tags on parts that matched their own internal part numbering system; a level of customization their previous supplier struggled to keep up with. Slow turnaround times were creating friction and delays.
The Solution: Our team took on roughly 50 unique parts requiring custom tags. While tagging each part meant manually modifying the bill of materials (BOM) files on our end, the payoff for the customer was seamless: once set up, every custom-tagged part could be ordered just like any standard part in the catalog.
Our Role: Speed and responsiveness made the difference. Our in-house 80/20 Design Team moved faster than the previous supplier, giving the customer a smoother, more reliable ordering experience going forward.
2. Automotive Manufacturing: Upgrading a Printer Stand Without Upgrading the Price
The Challenge: A production line labeling application needed a printer stand, but the customer's existing solution suffered from low-quality construction and a design that ignored the hardware the customer already kept in stock.
The Solution: Our team redesigned the stand with a higher-quality panel, without significantly increasing costs. We updated the connection methods to eliminate sag, a small but critical fix. And rather than introducing new specialty hardware, we designed the stand around fasteners the customer already stocked, so any future maintenance or replacement is simple and immediate. We then fully assembled the frames, delivering an install-ready solution straight out of the box.
Our Role: This was a case where minor design changes made a major difference. By focusing on small, thoughtful details (better materials, smarter hardware choices, and pre-assembly) we dramatically improved usability from the customer's perspective while keeping costs competitive while maintaining margins
3. Defense Manufacturing: Designing a Large-Scale Enclosure from Scratch
The Challenge: A defense manufacturing customer needed a dust containment enclosure but had no in-house design experience to draw on. With a large footprint required, ease of assembly and structural rigidity were the top priorities.
The Solution: AFS designed four different sized frame options, giving the customer the flexibility to iterate on floor layout before committing. They ultimately selected a 14' x 9' x 8' configuration. The final design was built to be modular, allowing for two-person installation, and used simple, intuitive connection methods which remained an important consideration for a team without prior design or assembly experience.
Our Role: This project was a great display of collaboration. By working closely with the customer through an iterative design process, AFS delivered a custom solution built specifically around their needs and skill level, not a one-size-fits-all product.
The Common Thread
Different industries, different applications, different challenges, but the same approach across all three: listen closely, respond quickly, and design around how the customer actually works. Whether that means matching a custom tagging system, working around existing hardware stock, or building in flexibility for a first-time design process, 80/20 framing adapts to fit the job.
Backed by In-House Experts
As the nation's largest 80/20 distributor, our Design Team offers more than just components off a shelf. Our structural aluminum capabilities span modular framing systems, accessories and components like fasteners, brackets, and panels, and fully custom specialty assemblies built around unique spatial, operational, or regulatory requirements.
Whether the application is a machine guard, a workstation, a conveyor structure, an enclosure, or an automation cell, our team combines deep 80/20 product knowledge with hands-on design and assembly support to get customers to a working solution faster.
